History and Timeline
The concept of the Gator Experience Record stemmed from the University of Florida’s efforts to capture comprehensive experiential learning engagement data. Based on national research, there is significant evidence that supports the link between experiential learning and post-graduation success. A study by Gallup shows that students participating in experiential learning activities,
including project work, internships, and involvement, have higher rates of overall “life preparedness.” In addition, experiential learners show higher rates of career satisfaction, stronger networks, and higher salaries in their early career (NACE, 2025). The University of Florida is committed to elevating all experiential learning initiatives available for UF undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Underscoring this ongoing commitment is an effort to capture comprehensive experiential learning engagement data each semester.
The Career Connections Center, Enrollment Management, and Office of Institutional Planning and Research have come together to lead the University’s efforts to capture comprehensive experiential learning engagement data each semester in accordance with the University’s Internship, Practicum, Work-Based, and Experiential Learning Reporting policy (16-001). After three years of data collection, the university invested in additional resources to support experiential learning outcomes and reporting, including implementation of a Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR).
In 2024, a collaborative workgroup was created with the Division of Student Life, Enrollment Management, and University of Florida Information Technology team members to operationalize the onboarding of a Comprehensive Learner Record- including selecting a technology platform, analyzing existing curricular and co-curricular university data, and discussing ways to infuse this concept into the fabric of the institution. In addition, workgroup members consulted with many stakeholders- including university administrators, faculty, student support staff, students, and alumni- to understand how to launch this initiative.
The University’s commitment to adopting a Comprehensive Learner Record continues to support, elevate, and recognize the holistic learning happening in curricular and co-curricular spaces. The Gator Experience Record is designed to provide students with a validated and verified account of their experiential learning- deepening their understanding of the value of their UF experience. In addition, the Gator Experience Record will be utilized as an educational tool to support conversations with students around developing and articulating skills needed to become world ready.
